Trains are something that British folk think as easy and speedy to use, there is no problems checking in, standing around to see your suitcase and going through complicated security checks when you are trying to get to Amsterdam. Everyone loves to travel (almost everyone). I certainly do. Believe it or not, doing it right and doing it on a budget takes a little skill, knowledge and practice. But the required skills are not difficult, the knowledge required is easy to obtain, and the fun is in the practice!

This past spring my wife and I were lucky enough to be able to
spend 10 days in Italy. We didn’t spend a fortune, we scrimped on a few things and spent on others, and the net result was a very pleasing travel experience. Planning, of course, is key. We had agreed to our general itinerary and had a limited amount of time to spend, so the general outline of the trip was pretty clear from the start. We flew to Rome, spent a few days taking care of the biggies like St. Peter’s, and the Vatican Museum, and did lots of strolling around the city.

Where did we stay? At a “budget” hotel. How did we find it?
The Internet. There are so many choices of reasonably-priced hotels, that the biggest problem is narrowing down the list. If you have even minimal Web-surfing skills, finding your accomodations this way is really pretty easy to do. Many establishments even offer a discount for reservations made online. Oh, by the way, when we paid the bill on the way out, we paid in cash - another discount!

How did we get from the airport in Rome to the hotel? (Hint: not by taxi.) We took the train! Much cheaper, more fun, and in fact, easier. Even if you can’t actually read the signs in the airport, finding the station is very easy. How did we really know it was so easy to get to the city from the airport on the train? We cheated. We read a travel guide before we left! I’m not pitching a travel book here, and I honestly
don’t remember which one it was, but the point is, a little research in advance can save you a lot of money, time, aggravation, fear, uncertainty and all those other negative emotions brought on by arriving in a foreign place and
suddenly realizing you have no idea what to do next. And finally, from the train station in the city to our hotel was a short walk because we planned it that way - no taxi fare. The walk to the hotel was made even more pleasant by the fact that we were not over-burdened with luggage, which brings us to the next practical tip - packing.

Ten days in Europe (or anywhere else) doesn’t require a mountain of baggage - at least not for two adults. Bags with handles and wheels are essential. Walking to the hotel with our luggage was a breeze. Packing, like the other parts of a trip, requires a little planning. If you’re careful, and are clear about your plans for touring and socializing, you can get by with less than you think.

Keeping your travel documents and money secure is always a concern. I learned an important lesson a few years ago during a trip to Europe. Having done a lot of business travel all over the world, I made the mistake of thinking I was immune from pick pockets. I won’t mention the city the event took place in, but afterwards I was stunned at the skill demonstrated by the “team” that got my wallet - out of a jacket pocket that was zipped closed! It happened in a revolving door - and
thinking back on the episode, I realize that I was expertly sized up for the “hit” beforehand. In short, realize that anyone can be “fooled” even if you think you’re an expert. Lesson - I NEVER travel now without a money belt. On our last trip to Italy, all valuables were in the money belt at all times, and there were no incidents. Even the “gypsy kids” at
the Coliseum were not a threat (if you go to Rome, be sure to read about the area around the Coliseum - you must see it, but it’s prime territory for expert young thieves).

In summary, a little thought and some careful planning can make a huge difference in the level of pleasure you derive from your next trip - whether it’s a European jaunt or a car trip with your whole family to mountains. I think letting someone else do it all and spending your days sealed up in a tour bus or following someone else around all day deprives you of half the fun. So plan your next trip carefully and you’ll enjoy it a lot more.

Windsor Castle Colourful History:

The beginning of Windsor were in the seventh century Saxon hamlet of Windlesora, where the recent day dwellings of Old Windsor is located. The settlement of Windsor is correctly branded as “New Windsor” - the actual phrase “new” being used in a relative way!

Windsor Castle in the beginning was put up by the famed William the Conqueror, on account of his hit of England in ten sixty six. The original frame was built from lumber with sol defences. The Castle held an obvious tactical position on a tall hill above the River Thames, & was part of an assortment of castles around the Capital, with the Tower of London, one day’s journey away, at its hub.

The Palace was then later remodelled in stone, & rose in magnitude during the years. More recently Henry the 2nd redesigned the Round Tower & the original stone outer wall. Following the English Civil War, the Castle’s principal function became that of a royal house. The Castle has stayed essentially unchanged since the early 19th century, apart from the overhaul job right after the awful fire.

If you are going to go on budget holidays, but you’re well past using Greyhound as a single mean of traveling, finding good, but inexpensive lodging on the course of your travels may become a problem. Internet searches

The easiest and the most common method is just to go online and search for the hotels or hostels in the area. The best way is, however, not to use any search engine, but go for some dedicated lodging directory (in every even remotely popular holiday destinations there is at least one such website) and browse it carefully, looking for the cheapest offers. The strong point of this method is the fact that in most cases you will be able to see some reliable customers’ reviews. They will tell you more about general ambiance and quality of the place than anything else. What’s more, all the information you need are at the same website, saving you a lot of time and nerves.

“Rumor has it”

If for any reason you can’t find the information you need on the Internet, you can turn to your friends and workmates. Maybe someone has heard about a good lodging in the area or has even been there. While such information is usually somewhat outdated, they may be found helpful.

Tourist boards

When you are out of ideas, the last thing you can do is to contact the local tourist board. They will surely have the list of lodgings in their area and probably will be able to give you the contact information. In most cases being a member of a local tourist board gives a hotel some level or reliability - they will need to keep some standards or they risk being kicked off the board.

Agents and publishing houses have their best interests at heart,
not the author’s. Save yourself from headaches, disappointments,
and money down the drain. Become your own independent publisher
and produce your book faster and cheaper. All you need is a
little help from professionals.

Myth: You need an agent or big publishing house to market your
book and make big money.

Since big publishers don’t look at unknown authors, now is the
time to look at what they can do for you. Dan Poynter, self-
publishing guru, says that if a publisher can’t sell four times
as many books as you can, you’re better off selling it yourself.
Self-publishing first is good because it acts as a test market
for your book. If it sells well (over 10,000 in a year),
publishers may be interested in your book. Traditional publishers
and agents accept only 1-2% of authors’ submissions, and even if
you are one of the “chosen” you may not make much money after
printing, bookstore, distributor, wholesaler and other expenses
–probably $2 on a $14 book. Yes, you get an advance, but your
sales must meet that and more. And after the initial book tour,
the trainee marketing person is onto the next new author. Then,
your books disappear from the bookstore shelf unless you,
personally, devote a lot of time to marketing them.

Book Publishing is a new game today. Think self-publishing where
the profits are all yours. Self-publishing is in. Thanks to Dan
Poynter of the Self Pulsing Manual for giving us permission to do
part of the task ourselves. If you self-publish and decide to
print, you need to print only the copies you need (5-500) with
the new technology Print on Demand (POD). No more unsold cartons
of books in your closets or garage. You print as you go leaving
enough cash flow to market your book splendidly.

Myth: To be a respected author, you must invest thousands of
hours of time on your full-length book.

The reality is that people today want concise and useful
information. You don’t have to write a 200-page book to be a
real author. Remember The One-Minute Manager and the One-Minute
Salesperson? Around one hundred pages. People want information
fast and convenient. Create short information products you can
sell online, even if you don’t have your own Web site.

If you choose to print your book with Print Quantity Needed
(PQN), your perfect bound books will look as good as any book
on the bookstore shelves.

Myth: Authors must spend a lot of money to publish themselves.
The printing costs for 1500 copies of a 160-page book might cost
$3000, about $2 a unit. Small runs cost even more per unit.

not worth it to many of us to use our home equity or life savings
to finance our book. The answer is a small run with Print on

include your table of contents at the end of each chapter and
present it as an e-serial book.

When you are trying to save money on airfare it’s critical to be able to check multiple airlines against one another to compare flights and their prices. If you go to one airline’s website they will show their best price for your trip, but you’ll have no idea if that price is more or less expensive than any of the other airlines that fly between those cities. Using a web-based search engine is your best hope for comparing flights with the least amount of hassle since they will automatically determine all the different airlines that go between those cities and then put the cheapest results on top.

Still, the process can be tricky because of the way these search results are presented. The problem is that most airlines will match the fares from the other airlines, so the cheapest flights are all bunched together on the top of the page. This is normally a good thing, but you have to also take into consideration that a flight with departing and arrival times that may be far better for you could be perhaps $10 more than the cheapest one you see on the list. So this flight will be either way down the page or will be on the next page altogether. When you compare flights it’s really important to look at the next price level or two higher to see if it’s better because often just a few dollars more will give you a far better trip.

Maui is a very popular tourist destination. To meet with every tourist’s accommodation needs, be it style or budget, the island has many options. You can lap up the luxury by renting an oceanfront suite or cottage, a quaint little bed-and-breakfast, or - if you are traveling with a large group or family or are staying for a long period - a house or condo.

Rental rates depend on the season. High season rates apply between mid-December and March and again between late June and early September.
