Maryland home inspectors have most certainly been in existance probably as long as houses themeslves. People would often ask someone they knew, suck as a parent, friend, or sometimes even a builder, to make a judgement on the house they were buying or planning to sell.
Quite often, that assessment was based on quick observation, little understanding of what was important, and quite often someone who was not at all educated in the nuances of buildings. This was during simpler times, using construction techniques that were simpler for the most part, and as such, evaluations rendered were predictably simple.
That was then and this is now. Times have changed and as a result, so have ome inspections. Fundamentally, the primary purpose of a home inspection is to identify to the buyer of any major deficiencies in the condition of the property, integral or influencing peripheral parts or systems of the property. We also hold it to be true to include in our reports the points of a property which are good. We know that an educated consumer is more likely to make a good decision. That customer would be misguided if we only focused on the concerns or problems with a home. Reporting on both the bad as well as the good things about the home is paramount in the decision making process.

iPhone - Another Feather In the Cap For Apple
Tuesday 15 December 2009 @ 12:56 pm

iPhone, Apple Inc’s latest offspring, has done the family proud if the usage figures are anything to go by. A recently released report shows that a good chunk of smartphone usage originates from iPhones.

While Apple has indeed struck gold with this product, the same cannot be said of similar devices from other brands. Mobile web traffic originating from a Blackberry handset accounted for a mere 12% of last month’s total mobile web traffic. For Palm Pre, the news is even worse, with usage dropping to 5% this month. That is half the previously recorded usage rate.

In the backdrop of this dismal performance of competitors, Apple’s iPhone has been found to be the source of half of the web traffic last month. The phone is making an unbeatable combination with Google’s Android. While it is not to be confused with sales figures, the usage itself proves the popularity of the device.

These figures were made known by mobile advertiser AdMob in its report that showed that smartphones using Google’s Android OS are accounting for a huge 75% of traffic in the US. AdMob derived these figures from its network of ad-servers that scan billions of ads across 15,000 mobile websites. When seen in conjunction with applications for smartphones, this data gives the smartphone usage figures.

Given these figures, fears that Apple users will hog the bandwidth seem to be coming true. If you haven’t yet joined the ranks of mobile internet users, take a look at mobile internet pay as you go, however which 3G handset you opt for is a different matter all together… me, myself and I; we are iPhone hogs.

Cornwall Set to become Major Business Hub with High Speed Broadband Connection
Tuesday 3 November 2009 @ 7:19 am

A concerted effort by the South West Regional Development Agency (SWRDA) and southwestbusiness.co.uk may give Cornwall a major boost and convert it to the most sought after business hub soon. With broadband being the focus of attention across the UK with the new Digital Britain initiatives, Cornwall seems determined not to be left behind.

The £100 million project to upgrade broadband networks in the county will allow businesses based here to get the advantages of super fast broadband soon. The project is expected to be implemented using fibre optic cables. Once completed, Cornwall will boast of the fastest broadband connection in the country with speeds up to 1Gb. The project will be undertaken under the auspices of a grant aimed at enhancing the local economy and upgrading the employability of the local workforce.

The broadband project is scheduled to begin next year. Kevin Lavery, Head of Cornwall Council, gave a status report of the project. He explained that at present, bids are being called for and after analysis and review by year end, the selected bidder will be identified. Once this is done, the actual work can begin.

The project is expected to boost Cornwall’s economic fortunes by placing it on top of the list of preferred business locations for companies around the world.

Mobiles Do Work in the Valleys
Friday 14 August 2009 @ 2:29 pm

In a first for mobiles, a cellular telephone for Welsh speakers has been designed and produced. All of the navigational menus and even the predictive text functionality are in Welsh. From September and only on the old Orange mobile network, the Welsh mobile phone will be available for purchase with a contract or on its own.

An iPhone app or application as they are known, has been produced by the National Eisteddfod for Welsh learners internationally. Top academics including the head of computer science at Aberystwyth University, Professor Chris Price, have been involved in the design of the Welsh learning iPhone application.

Both were released at the eisteddfod in Bala, Gwynedd.

As well as important people from Orange and Samsung, the Heritage Minister Alun Ffred Jones was also there for the Welsh phone unveiling. Sian Doyle, Orange’s head of retail, said: “Orange is very proud to be the first network to introduce this truly innovative service to Welsh speakers.

Seemingly Orange have a deeper commitment of which this is part, to provide Welsh speakers with greater choice when it comes to mobile communications.

The phone will have over 44,000 words stored on it. Meanwhile, the Learn Welsh phrase book will available to download from Apple’s iTunes.

Based on Prof Price’s own experiences of learning Welsh, the phrase book is separated into 12 themed segments that include greetings, common phrases, food and drink, and travelling. Prof Price has also taped each phrase, a characteristic he hopes will help with pronunciation.

An additional new feature is a practice mode, which offers learners the opportunity of testing themselves as they learn new words.

The iPhone has a vast amount of applications which can be downloaded, which assist the user in learning another language. These cover many languages from French, to Italian, through to Irish and Tagalog.

The Professor was positive that with the plethora of other language help applications available, that those learning Welsh should also have a similar chance.

Moving swiftly on from Welsh to Irish; ninety-three per cent of people in Northern Ireland now have a mobile, according to new Ofcom research. In the previous year this figure was only eighty five percent, and the figure for this year is over four percent higher than the rest of the UK.

52% of the population in Northern Ireland use their mobile as their primary communication method; which is 14% larger than the rest of the united Kingdom.

The research that was carried out also exposed the fact that nearly ninety percent of Northen Irish households have some form of digital TV too.

BT and Cashbox to Join Forces to Provide WiFi through ATMs
Friday 3 July 2009 @ 9:36 am

In an innovative move, Cashbox is all set to offer Wifi access to users via their pay per withdrawal ATM machines. The end result will be ATM machines that also serve as BT Openzone hotspots. The public should expect a lot of these hotspots to pop up within the next five years if the initiative goes well.

With over 2500 ATMs across the country at locations where there aren’t many other high street banks, Cashbox is planning to test the service at ten of their locations initially. The preliminary locations include Tiger Tiger branches in London, Manchester and Glasgow.

Most of these locations are the type where one may struggle to find internet access, particularly Wifi access. If mobile broadband is still a bit of a worry for you, try a dedicated site; refer to Mobile Broadband Genie for some really good information and advice on all that’s mobile broadband.

The news has been confirmed by Ciaran Morton, CEO of Cashbox, who says that there are some sites, which will be higher in the priority list for conversion to hotspots, as these locations would be more appealing to WiFi users. He also explained that the revenue earned from this initiative will be shared between BT and Cashbox. He stated that the number of hotspots would go up depending on the success of the venture. It is obvious that this is a novel concept and the company wants to evaluate the response before upgrading more cash machines to an Openzone hotspot.

The deal has already been signed between BT and Cashbox and the service would be accessible to BT broadband customers who have purchased WiFi minutes, as well as Boingo, O2 iPhone, and iPass users.

Mobile Operators Fail to Reach Agreement on Spectrum Allocation
Wednesday 6 May 2009 @ 7:43 am

A number of unsuccessful talks, aimed at reaching an agreement regarding the reallocation of the disputed 900MHz spectrum that was originally acquired by Vodafone and O2 back in the ’80s, are creating a major rift in the UK telecom industry. The 900MHz spectrum has been identified as the ideal spectrum for mobile broadband services. Other telecom companies are demanding a fair share of the spectrum but Vodafone and O2 predictably refuse to part with their possession.

Seeing that the talks did not produce any mutually acceptable conclusions by the government set April 30 deadline, Kip Meek, a close advisor of the Communication Minister Stephen Carter, has lost all hopes of bringing the mobile service providers on a common platform. Until a resolution is reached, the government’s plan of providing mobile broadband to rural areas will not be able to proceed.

Meek has now announced a new proposal to resolve the spectrum reallocation issue. The proposal suggests allowing Vodafone and O2 to retain their chunk of the 900MHz range, but forbids them from receiving any of the spectrum that will be available in 2012, when TV signals would switch from analogue to digital formats.

However, other telecom companies, especially T-Mobile broadband and Orange mobile broadband, are opposing Meek’s proposal. The two companies support Ofcom
