A great way to jump-start your garden and save money is to start your plants indoor before planting season. You will also be sure of the conditions the plants were grown in, unlike plants bought in stores. There are a few tricks to know to make your seedlings thrive.
To start, you must choose appropriate containers for your seedlings. The best ones to use are wood pulp pots or peat pellets. It’s less trouble for you and healthier on the seedlings, since you can plant them directly in the ground. But you can use any small containers, like egg boxes or yogurt containers. Just make sure there are holes at the bottom for drainage.
You must also fill the pots with appropriate soil. Any well-drained soil will do, but it is best to use sterilized, store-bought soil instead of soil from outside. This way, you can be sure it doesn’t contain any fungus or illness which could be dangerous for young plants. And you do not want to bring all the insects and worms from outside into your house!
You can now plant your seeds in the containers. Follow the instructions on the seed packages for depth. You do not need to put many seeds in a pot. Just a few will do.
You should now water your seeds. When you are done, cover the pots to conserve moisture and place them in a hot place. Keep them out of direct sunlight. They do not need any sunlight at this stage anyway, but keep an eye out to make sure they have enough water.
Once the seeds have germinated, they will need more sunlight. Move them to the brightest spot you can find, preferably a south-facing window. You will have to be even more careful now and water them often, since small pots cannot hold a lot of water. Also, the seedlings are fragile at this stage, so do not drown them or cause them to break by watering too fast.
If the seedlings get too big for their pots before planting season, you can move them to bigger pots to make sure they stay healthy and strong.
When you have a week or so to go before moving them to your garden, bring them outside during the day to harden them. Do not put them in direct sunlight at first and bring them back inside during the night.
And finally, when your plants have grown enough (with at least four leaves) and the weather is warm enough, you can move them to your garden.
If you did not plant them in pellets or wood pulp pots, you will need to remove them from their pot with a blunt tool, like a table knife, while you support the plant with your fingers. Dig a hole slightly deeper than the height of the pot, lower the plant in the hole and firm the soil gently around the stem. Water them carefully and your garden is ready to go!

The Christmas season brings with it many decisions to be made. Among them is, “What type of Christmas tree should I put up?” This year, consider a living Christmas tree. Not only will you enjoy it through the holidays, but a living tree can be planted in the garden to enhance your landscape and spark wonderful memories for years to come.
To allow your living tree to thrive in your garden, you must provide it with a small amount of special care. The following tips from the National Christmas Tree Association will help ensure your living tree’s success:
• The adaptability of the species should be considered. Many species are shipped outside of their natural area and may not be adaptable to other areas. Check with a reliable nursery or extension forester.
• Keep in mind that living trees are VERY heavy and bulky. A six foot tall balled and burlapped tree will weigh as much as 250 pounds.
• Protect the tree from the elements. The tree should be stored in an unheated, sheltered area such as a garage or porch, out of the wind and sun. Do not expose the tree to freezing temperatures at any time.
• The tree will need adequate water. The root ball or soil should be kept slightly damp but not flooded. Wrap the root ball of a balled tree in plastic or place in a tub while it is in the house.
• Living trees may be decorated, but with care. If lights are used, they must not give off any heat.
• Avoid extreme temperature changes. Do not remove the tree directly from a warm house out into freezing temperatures. Instead, move to a sheltered area first for several days.
• Plant the tree as soon as possible. If the ground is not frozen, the tree may be replanted. The spot to be dug should be mulched to prevent freezing.
• Do not remove the burlap and strapping (unless it is plastic). This keeps the root ball solid and secure. In the instance of a plastic cover, cut the cord and roll down the plastic at least half way prior to planting. Tap the tree container of a potted tree and remove prior to planting. Do not attempt to remove soil from the root system. Earth removed from the original hole should be backfilled around the root ball. Mulch heavily over the top of the planted root ball to prevent it from freezing. Water only as needed: a flooded tree may not survive.
• Provide support for the tree. Stake the tree to prevent wind tipping or damage during the first growing season.
Try a living Christmas tree. With proper care, it will keep bringing you enjoyment throughout the years.

Landscape gardening is creative art-work. It often has a point
of chief interest, just like the painting of a picture. And the

Landscape gardening may follow along very formal lines or along
informal lines. The first would have straight paths, straight
rows in stiff beds, everything, as the name tells, perfectly
formal. The other method is, of course, the exact opposite.
The formal arrangement is likely to look too stiff; the
informal, too fussy, too wiggly. As far as paths go, keep this
in mind, that a path should always lead to somewhere and to
direct one to a definite place. Now, straight, even paths are
not unpleasing if the effect is to be that of a formal garden.
To avoid an abrupt curve and a whirligig effect in a curved
path, t is far better to stick to straight paths unless you can
make a really beautiful curve.
Garden paths may be of gravel, of stepping stones, of dirt, or
of grass. One sees grass paths in some very lovely gardens. They
may not work well in small gardens with limited garden areas
that they are re-spaded each season. Of course, a gravel path
makes a fine appearance, but again you may not have gravel at
your command. Stepp
ing stones, plain or decorated with a picture, suite your
garden as well. To place stepping stones, dig out the path for
two feet, then put in six inches of stone or clinker. Over this,
pack in the dirt, rounding it slightly toward the center of the
path. They form convenient places for water to stand. The under
layer of stone makes a natural drainage system.
Gardening is limited only by your imagination. There’re so many
things you can do with the garden. Besides garden paths, trees
and flower beds, wind chimes brings relaxation and joy to your
