Avoiding Overplaying AK By B. Butler Ace king, or big slick, is probably the most overplayed hand in the game of poker. While it looks amazing before the flop, the largest unpaired hand, when it fails to connect it is often difficult for poker online players to concede that they are behind even a lowly pair of deuces. Though continuation betting to represent a hand that did not need to improve is often correct and can pick up pots, realizing when you get reraised thereafter that you are likely beat is an important “give it up” moment for many players. Pure math poker players like David Sklansky go so far as to discredit even pushing AK more than you would a hand like KQ or any other unpaired hand. Sklansky has been known to fold AK preflop when someone raises before him, as he’d rather have the power of aggression behind him and not just be calling down with two big cards. For him, taking the lead with the hand is more important than the sheer size of the two connected cards. The value lost in calling down rather than having the lead is big enough to realize that the cards themselves should not be pushed too hard without presence, and that overplaying a hand as such is simply reckless.

In an interesting news item out of Canada, it appears Loto-Quebec, the province’s official state poker authority, will pay for therapy for gambling addicts. Loto-Québec will pay for addiction therapy for thousands of compulsive online poker gamblers in the province, after the gaming corporation reached an out-of-court deal in a decade-old class action suit. On Tuesday, the Quebec Superior Court approved a multimillion-dollar settlement between Loto-Québec and a group of compulsive gamblers that sued the gaming corporation for damages related to their addiction. In the deal, Loto-Québec agrees to pay for the gamblers’ addiction therapy between 1994 and 2002, to an average of about $5,000 per claimant. The lawsuit will cost an estimated $50 million and affect nearly 120,000 people in Quebec. When the gamblers first sued they sought about $700 million and measures to warn the public about the dangers of gambling. They accused the gaming corporation of negligence for not including warnings on video lottery terminals One would have to wonder if this ruling will set a precedent in other places, and provide government-run therapy for online poker and other gambling addicts, as some countries do for alcohol and substance abuse sufferers. Do you think this is an effective way to solve a growing problem?
Tip 10: Keep your Cache of Ammo Full when you don’t need to fire
There’s no need to use a sword to open a package when a knife will do the same job. Sure it may look fancier if you can dance along edges of a piece of plastic with a katana and remove the item you were trying to get out with the tip if the blade, but it’s just wasted energy.
The point I’m trying to make is, don’t use your fancy moves when you don’t have to. If you’re running well, playing solid ABC poker, no need to pull out the check raises and double barrel bluffs just to prove a point that you can do it. This is mainly because it puts you at a disadvantage in two ways. One, you’re wasting valuable resources to pull off moves that you may not even need to pull off to win. Two, you’re giving the seasoned players at the table information they don’t need. Doe they need to know you can bluff with A-high to the river? No. Do they need to know that you understand pot control and the 4bet push? No.
So, save your fancy stuff for when it’s needed. See, in order for most of these moves to work, you have to be an aggressive force at the online poker table already. If you’re running bad, then you don’t have this image going for you. Thus, most of your moves won’t be “respected.” In that case, sometimes it’s better to just sit back, be the rock, and wait for a more appropriate time to assert yourself. When you do come back in shining glory, then you will again be seen as a force at the table.
In life, think of things in the same terms. Perhaps a negotiation is going downhill and you’re losing ground. It may be time to just lurk for a while and let things move the way they’re naturally moving until you try to get fancy with things. Sometimes showing too much early and overplaying your skill can come off as prematurely shooting your rounds, when you should be saving them for ammunition you may need later in the event you don’t get a chance to refill your clip. Remember to watch out for this when you play poker online.
I like to keep up with my friends’ poker online playing habits on Gmail Chat. Here’s a sample from the horse’s mouth.

Whenever you turn on the television to watch a poker game there is a strong chance that you will catch a stud game in progress. These kinds of games are far more popular with viewing audiences than draw online poker varieties. The reasons should be immediately apparent to anyone who has every played a high stakes stud game: they are simply more exciting. Stud games rely on multiple betting rounds and slow play to build the excitement. Because there is so much involved in a stud casino game it is necessarily slower than a draw variety. People take their time making decisions as the tension mounts. More and more money goes into the pot as the players wager after each new card. This makes for good television. Viewing audiences have also tuned into the fact that it is more enjoyable to watch a game where you can see some of the players’ cards. When you give the audience just a little bit of information like that it makes them eager to see if they can predict the winner. If you think that tension runs high while watching a stud game, you should try your hand playing at the table. Stud games are the best way to get the true adrenaline filled poker experience.
My introduction to the world of poker theory and application came through books. Though I’d played in home games and some online before, I’d never really thought of the game of Texas hold em outside the confines of a pastime, a great entertainment that if I made some money during, great.
As I got more into the game, I read a couple of important online poker books such as Phil Hellmuth’s Play Poker Like The Pros, Dan Harrington’s tournament poker books, and pretty much anything else I could get my hands on. Reading those books helped me open my brain up to the possibilities of ways of thinking about the game outside of just entertainment, and more of a science. It was a vital part of my learning, and without it I would probably have never gotten much further than my friends’ basements on weekday nights for $20.
Translating the theory and ideas in online poker books, though, is something that can only really go down in actual time spent in hand to hand play. As instructive as those books were, the true way to learn to play the game of poker is to play, while thinking about what you are doing instead of just going along for the ride. There truly is no substitute for experience, for having been there, and the learning never really stops until you do.
Like a good Sherlock Holmes novel, online poker is full of clues that will lead you to the bottom of the mystery. If you’ve ever read a psychological thriller, then you know what I’m talking about. You’re reading though the book and you are already trying to solve the mystery before the author reveals who was the killer or criminal. Well, poker online can be no different if you take this approach to it. Let me give you an example and see if you can come up with the solution before I tell it to you. You’re dealt 8-3 offsuit under the gun. Solution number one should be that you fold. Now let’s get to the real mystery. You’re watching the poker online table to see why people do what they do. A middle position players raises it to 20 dollars in a 2-5 dollar game. The button and the big blind call. What do we deduce from the middle position player? In order to get an idea, we have to have a history for the player. In this case we don’t, so this particular move doesn’t mean too much to us yet. He could have AA, or he could have a low suited connecting hand. We get little information other than that MP has taken the initiative and hasn’t been reraised. The flop comes Ah-7d-3c. The big blind checks. MP bets out 40 dollars, 2/3 the pot roughly. What can we now deduce about his hand. Well chances are he’s not on a flush draw. The button simply calls again. We can’t be certain that MP has an ace. But he may. He may be a solid player who is simply continuation betting. And it seems that with 2/3 of the pot, he’s not trying to blatantly buy it, so we can assume he’s hit something. The turn comes 7h. MP bets 70. Can we put him on a hand yet, it’s a fraction of the pot? We still don’t know exactly what MP has, he could have two pair now Aces and 7s or he could simply be continuation betting on a second street, the reverse float. But the button, he instantly calls the 70. What do we think he’s sitting on? If I had to guess I’d say he just caught trips. And we can put his hand on something like A7 suited or a suited connector 67, 78 and possibly 79s. The river comes Kd, and MP checks. What do we put him on now? Not AK or he’d be betting here, despite the button’s over anxiousness to get his money in the pot. So he probably has an Ace. The button bets out here about 120. What does this bet tell us. It’s the standard size for a good value bet, so chances are this bet represents extreme strength. MP folds his AQs and the Button flashes 77 before he mucks his hand. He was slow rolling quads, which is out of the ordinary but not impossible. You have to remember to think of all the possibilities, not just the ones that are given to you when analyzing and deducing hands.
