Maximize Team Chemistry in Your Organization - Nu Leadership Series
Wednesday 2 April 2008 @ 10:43 pm

“The time is always right to do what is right.”
Martin Luther King, Jr.

To build a successful organization, leaders need to understand the importance of group dynamics and team chemistry. In other words, employees and leaders need to respect each other and get along. According to Hackman and Johnson (leadership gurus), the Leader-member-exchange (LMX) Theory is another process that outlines the leader-follower development process for relationships. Let’s explore this more closely. The basic concept is that leaders generally establish two different types of relationships with followers: “in-group” and “out-group.” The in-group is granted more responsibility and influence in decisions. This may remind you of high school. Were you part of the in-group at your school? Did it hurt to be part of the out-group? Leaders need wise individuals as personal advisors; however, a leader must be careful about any organizational ramifications. Why should a leader care? The LMX Theory can create bad feelings in an organization. This could damage team chemistry and make an organization less effective. Organizational cohesiveness is critical for success.

Let’s apply this concept to a mystical journey to King Arthur’s Court and meet the Knights of the Round Table. King Arthur, the son of Uther, was made famous by withdrawing a sword (Excalibur) from a stone and made King of England. He was then given the Round Table as a dowry. Knights, such as Lancelot, were men of courage, valor, and nobleness. They were to protect damsels, fight for kings, and undertake dangerous quests like the search for the Holy Grail. The Knight Order’s dominant ideas were the love of God, men, and noble deeds. The LMX Theory was in play.

Let’s dig deeper by exploring a dyadic relationshipmarriage. The LMX Theory describes the role-making process for leader-followers. Yukl, the author of Leadership in Organizations, maintains that a high-exchange relationship contains high mutual influence. Marriage involves shared experiences and common goals. What happens when things change? Follow my example. Body Boy achieves his fitness goal. Mr. Boy is transformed from a shapeless couch potato to a well-formed man. Everyone loves his transformation, except his wife. She is inactive person. She witnesses ladies swarm around Mr. Body. She screams, “Body Boy!” Sadly, misunderstandings can damage the chemistry in an organization. Have you seen it happen in your organization? Formal groups are more costly in this regard than voluntary groups because they are the creation of management, rather than arising by natural design. Organizational chemistry keeps these efforts aligned.

Clearly, good chemistry is vital in achieving any level of organizational excellence. Leaders need to build relationships with followers in a constructive manner. Therefore, organizations can accomplish this task through training and building caring corporate culture. The results will help produce good team chemistry. Start today, Leader!

Wednesday 2 April 2008 @ 8:57 pm

Successful companies have innovation in their blood. The single most important element in an innovative company is the creativity of their people. Creative thinkers don’t win by conforming to a given set of rules. Rather they reinvent the game by asking the 20 challenging questions and following 20 breakthrough strategies.

20 Challenging Questions to Ask:

  1. What if….?
  2. What do you think about….?
  3. What’s the next step?
  4. What can we do better?
  5. How can we streamline?
  6. What should we modify?
  7. What should we replace?
  8. What should we add?
  9. What should we eliminate?
  10. Can we make any new assumptions?
  11. What will make it work?
  12. What other ideas do you have?
  13. What issues should we explore?
  14. What patterns can you see?
  15. How can we simplify?
  16. How can we improve?
  17. How will the customer benefit?
  18. Have we forgotten anything?
  19. What else?
  20. Why?

20 Break Through Strategies to Follow:

  1. Innovate for today as well as tomorrow.
  2. Focus on what you can reasonably do…and stretch a bit.
  3. Make innovation part of the day-to-day operations.
  4. Develop a company-wide innovation process.
  5. Assign responsibility to one person or team for the innovative process.
  6. Provide incentives if you want your people to be creative.
  7. Reward the whole team, not just individuals.
  8. Train everyone in your company’s innovation process.
  9. Focus innovation efforts on market needs & opportunities.
  10. Target value and results instead of novelty.
  11. Abandon old and the obsolete ways, but do so systematically.
  12. Set high goals, but reward small improvements.
  13. Focus on “new and different” as well as “better and more.”
  14. Ask, “Is this the right opportunity?”
  15. Establish specific accountabilities and targets.
  16. Understand that innovation can require long lead time.
  17. Accept innovation is an absolute survival skill.
  18. Keep innovating; today’s success is built on yesterday’s results.
  19. Remember, innovation is both hard work and fun.
  20. Start small, but START.

Picking A Good Online Degree Program
Wednesday 2 April 2008 @ 10:27 am

Finding a distance learning program has never been easier but
picking a good distance learning program is not as simple.
That’s because there has been an explosion in the number of
schools, universities and other institutions offering distance
learning as part of their programs. They are doing this to try
and meet a similar upswing in the desire of Americans for
another or different way to get access to higher education.

Your first step should be to eliminate a number of distance
learning options because they are simply not up the standards as
the rest of the academic community.

Avoid schools that do not require tests, essays or studying.
Those are essential elements of a good academic program and how
will they know if you have learned the material if there are no
exams at the end. You should also be wary of schools that
advertise their programs through mass e-mails or spam. They may
be less than adequate in their education program and any online
degree or certificate they provide may be worthless to you and
unappealing to prospective employers.

Next you ready for a comparison test based on your particular
course of study, how much you are willing to pay, and any
attachment you may have to one or more highly regarded schools.
First of all a few words on costs. Your online degree will cost
you money, and probably lots of it, but it will be a fraction of
the cost of attending the real school. Remember too that the
price rises with the reputation of the school and its faculty.
If price or cost is not your prime consideration then try to get
into the best school with the best program. You won’t regret
that decision.

If you can narrow your choice down to two or three distance
learning programs then you should consider a school in your
state versus one outside. That’s because there may be subsidies
available within your state that will not apply if you study
across the state line. Proximity to the school may be another
factor because one day you may want to take a visit to your alma
mater or see your online professors in person.

Whatever you ultimately decide your choice of a distance
learning program will help you move closer to your goal of
having a higher education. Choose well and good luck with your
studies. Sooner than you think you may be receiving your online
degree and the congratulations of your friends and family on
becoming a college graduate.

Giddy When Lifting Weight In Gym? Training Big Muscle Groups Cause Nausea?
Wednesday 2 April 2008 @ 10:26 am

Ask any body builder and everyone will say they will feel light headed, nauseous and even sometimes even puke when they train big muscle groups with exercises such as squats and dead lifts. Some great bodybuilders even take pride that they puke after an intensive bout of weightlifting as an indication that they have had a fantastic workout. But to many, these symptoms are unpleasant, disruptive and could be even be dangerous and cause injuries. Perhaps, you may also have experienced these symptoms as well.

What happened? Well, there could be several causes.

• First of all, you may have eaten or drunk too much before your gym workout. So you blood is channeled to your digestive organs for your digestive process. But when you begin to exercise intensively especially on big muscle groups, a lot of blood is channeled away from your digestive organs to the muscles. When that happens, food is now in your digestive system left unattended and therefore undigested and thus causing you to feel nauseous.

• Your blood sugar level may be low. This could happen when you are on a low carbohydrate caloric restriction diet or have not eaten for sometime and is now lifting heavy weights. You will feel giddy, tired and may even develop a headache and suffering muscular weakness. It simply boils down to a decreased of energy level for not having enough energy nutrients prior to your workout.

• The most common cause of nausea when weight lifting is low blood pressure. It could be inherent that you have low blood pressure and if not, it is caused by change of body position. Have you ever felt giddy when you are sitting stationary for sometime then suddenly gotten up and stretch? Well, if you have had that experience, then the same logic and science applies. The sudden fall of blood pressure happens when you are in a squatting position and then suddenly bursting upwards to a standing position with the blood pooled in your lower body and not sending the blood fast enough to your upper body and your brain.

These are some of the reasons why many of us will experience giddiness, nausea and even puke when we do exercises like squats and dead lifts with heavy weights and when working on big muscle groups.

Now that we know the reasons, we can avoid these unpleasant symptoms by taking necessary precautions during our gym workout on heavy weight days.
